Actress Linda Hunt became acquainted with Best Friends Animal Society back in the mid-1990s when she met Francis and Silva Battista, two of the organization’s founders, in Los Angeles.

Before Shannon Bahrke went on to become a world champion mogul skier and a silver medalist at the Salt Lake Winter Olympics in 2002, she grew up surrounded by what she calls a “mishmash” of animals at her home in Tahoe City, California – dogs, cats, birds, fish, all of whom her family had either rescued or adopted.

Nearly 25 years ago, the founders of Best Friends set out to create a place like no other: the last, best hope for severely abused and forgotten animals. It wasn’t to be a place for just their physical healing, but a place to rebuild spirit and to recover a sense of belonging and trust.
